We were down in Williamsburg for a short trip and had a lot of people recommend Fat Canary. We weren't able to get a reservation but we tried to call right when they opened. The phone went straight to a busy dial tone. I called about 20 minutes later and someone indicated that they had a table around 7-7:30 downstairs as the main room was all booked up. We would have to come in to put down a name doe the reservation. Luckily we were close by and was able to place our name down for 7 pm.
We arrived around 6:45 and kind of hung out in their wine shop until 7:15. They have two menus, their main and then the downstairs menu. My friend ordered a the Bee-Laverdier cocktail which she really enjoyed. For our appetizer, we ordered the Lobster and for our entrees, I ordered the Pan Seared Duck Breast and my friend ordered the Grilled Atlantic Salmon.
The Lobster fettuccine dish was okay, the snap peas seemed a little out of place and so did the pistachios. It seemed like it was a really random put together dish and kind of more of a small pasta plate than an appetizer.
While the duck and salmon were both cooked beautifully, I found my duck lacking in flavor and the cherry demi glaze seemed more of a jus at the bottom of my plate under the Farro. My friends salmon sat upon Fregula pasta but there was a lot of oil at the bottom of the dish. It also seemed a strange mix with the golden raisins and capers as well. I asked for a recommendation of a wine pairing with the duck and was suggested the Cabernet Sauvignon Quilt. I'm not sure if something had adjusted my palate beforehand but it seemed quite acidic.
Overall, a little disappointed as we heard so many great reviews. Not sure if I'd come back to try any of their other items. A cute place with a great atmosphere and a cute wine market downstairs but the food was lacking in our opinion.
Pretty disappointed considering what we paid for and how everyone has hyped it up to us. The food was very average for the price, good but not great. The restaurant itself is extremely crowded and we were in arms reach of both tables next to us. We could hear their conversations way too clearly and it really changed the atmosphere, especially for our anniversary. I’m sad because we really wanted to like it and we made reservations months in advance. Don’t think we will be back.
Very cozy atmosphere. Excellent service and superior meals served with fresh ingredients and cooked perfectly. Seared scallops are especially delicious, tender, and flavorful. Full bar and a huge wine selection.
We had a fabulous 50th Anniversary dinner!! They treated us great and every dish we ordered was excellent!!
We were finally able to snag a table downstairs in their wine cellar and it was so worth the wait!! Starting off walking on, the wine shop is well lit but the restaurant potion is more dimly lit and cozy, perfect for a date night. Our sever was just utterly wonderful and so knowledgeable. We ordered the mozzarella appetizer, rabbit fricasse and tuna tempura. Our sevrer recommend a white burgundy to go with my rabbit dish. Hubby opted for one of their reds. The food was absolutely incredible! Starting off the mozzarella appetizer was dleuxous and so well seasoned. I love fresh mozzarella but it can sometimes be aittle blad, but not in this dish. I didn't lack the plate out of good manners but the temptation was there. My rabbit dish was so indescribably delcious. The rabbit leg was cooked perfectly and served over the most luscious mushrooms with two flaky and delicious mini biscuits. Hubby loved his tuna dish. There was a bit of a delay with his dish but our server was totally on it. While the food was amazing, I'd come back just for the service alone. I also ended up taking home a bottle of the white burgundy I had with my dinner. This place totally lived up to its hype and I can't wait to go back and try more of their menu and delicious wines.
The food is fantastic and the staff is friendly. I would highly recommend sitting at the bar. But keep in mind that you need to reserve sitting at the bar, too. If you don’t make reservations; then you can be added to a waitlist starting at 4:30 pm, so it’s worth it to make sure you have reservations. You don’t want to miss out on a delicious meal. The mozzarella appetizer was my favorite dish of the evening. Can’t wait to come back and try more dishes.
Great service and great food. I got the beef tenderloin and my wife got the rock fish special. Only complaint would be the uppity old man that was sitting next to us that complained about everything. Your food is coming out too fast??? That’s a complaint??? Could tell his wife was embarrassed by him. Fat canary gets 5 stars. Clientele… 2 (they were still entertaining) :D
I’ve heard about this restaurant for years and finally had the opportunity to go and boy did it live up to the hype.
Everything was delicious. The service was excellent. I’m definitely going to dream about this meal till I can go back again.
It’s pretty expensive (1+$100pp) but the value is 100% there. Def recommend!
